Delivery Director is a senior role that sits at the intersection of programme management, stakeholder leadership, and commercial accountability. Writing a resume for this role is harder than most — the title means different things at different companies, the scope varies enormously, and ATS systems are calibrated to a wide range of keyword sets. Here is how to get it right.
What ATS systems look for at Director level
Director-level ATS scoring weights differently from mid-level roles. Keyword matching still matters, but context matters more. Sophisticated systems (and the humans behind them) look for evidence of scale: budget size, team headcount, delivery scope, and business impact. Your resume needs to quantify these explicitly.
Core keywords that appear in nearly every Delivery Director JD: programme delivery, stakeholder management, P&L (or "budget management"), cross-functional leadership, risk management, governance, and transformation.
The profile section is your most important ATS asset
The first paragraph of your resume — typically a 4–6 line profile or summary — is where ATS systems weight keywords most heavily. It is also the first thing a human reads if you get through. Pack it with role-level keywords while keeping it readable: your discipline (delivery / programme management), your sector, your seniority signals (teams of X, budgets of £Xm), and 2–3 strategic differentiators.
Avoid generic openers like "results-driven leader" or "passionate professional". They consume valuable keyword space with zero ATS value.
Structuring your experience for Director-level scanning
Each role entry should open with a 2–3 sentence context statement: what the organisation does, the scope of your remit, and the key challenge you were hired to address. This is not wasted space — it tells the ATS (and the reader) the scale you operated at.
Follow with 4–6 achievement statements. At Director level, achievements should be commercial ("delivered £12m infrastructure programme 3 weeks ahead of schedule"), strategic ("led vendor consolidation reducing annual spend by 22%"), or people-level ("grew delivery function from 8 to 35 across 4 countries").
Keywords to include by domain
Consulting-track Delivery Directors need: client delivery, engagement management, revenue recognition, utilisation, practice leadership, and bid management. In-house Directors need: product delivery, engineering partnerships, roadmap governance, OKRs, and agile at scale. Infrastructure/IT Directors need: ITIL, change management, service management, vendor management, and SLAs.
What to condense and what to keep in full
Roles more than 15 years old rarely contribute to ATS scoring and consume space that dilutes your recent keyword density. Condense early career into a single line: "Earlier: IBM (Consultant), Capgemini (Senior Analyst), 2003–2009." This keeps the resume clean while preserving career trajectory for the reader.
Keep every role from the last 10–12 years in full. Recruiters for Director roles want to see a coherent progression and will not look kindly at unexplained gaps or terse descriptions for recent positions.
The ATS test before you apply
Before submitting, paste the JD into an ATS checker and compare keyword overlap. If your required keyword match is below 70%, rewrite the profile section and one or two role descriptions. If it is above 80%, you are well-positioned to pass the automated screen.
